A video has been posted online of two Algerian diplomats kidnapped in Iraq, men whose days are numbered, according to the al-Qaeda group in the country. A statement from their captors says the pair will be killed as an example to what they describe as “infidel governments”.

Both men were picked up on July 21 in Baghdad. One is Algiers’ top representative in the country, the other is his deputy. The Algerian embassy is now completely empty. All staff were withdrawn in the wake of the kidnapping, although the government insists it was a precautionary measure, not a response to demands from insurgents. Egypt’s top envoy to Iraq was abducted and killed earlier this month.
