US Defence Minister Donald Rumsfeld has admitted the Americans have made contact with rebels in Iraq but has underlined that doesn’t mean an end to hostilities.

“The next step, as you point out, is the constitutional drafting, and then the referendum, and then the election under that in December. The terrorists know that. They are out trying to stop that. So, it is entirely possible that they could increase the level of violence between now and then”, he said. The Congress and public opinion are expressing growing doubts over the war in Iraq – some Republicans are joining Democrats in calling for a date to be set for the withdrawal of US troops. In the latest violence on Sunday, 25 people died in three separate suicide attacks.
