There are fresh warnings in Europe that the current heatwave, with temperatures in the 30s and lack of wind, looks set to last at least until the weekend.
Belgium has joined France in putting in force a special heatwave alert, an action plan drawn up after the deadly hot weather that claimed thousands of lives in 2003.
The measures are aimed at reducing the risks for the most vulnerable, especially the elderly and the sick.
As well as the health concerns, numerous governments are having to grapple with water shortages and drought.
Record dry conditions are now being reported in many areas, and officials are urging people to remain on alert and conserve water.
In Britain, people in some areas are being warned to avoid exposure to dangerous smog that often accompanies a heatwave.
