China has hardened its position on the textile flow to Europe, saying it will not voluntarily limit exports.
But it may be forced to. France has praised Brussels’ stern new tone with Beijing but wants quick action. It says EU moves to cut Chinese imports are not enough. The European Commission’s most senior spokesperson says if the Chinese authorities fail to exercise moderation, it is quite possible that the EU will reimpose limits on more import categories. It has already threatened to do so on two of them: T-shirts and flax yarn. Quotas for global textile trade were abolished at the beginning of the year. Several EU states are demanding that barriers be raised again, immediately.
