A classical open-air concert has been held in central Amsterdam in honour of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, who is celebrating her Silver Jubilee. It was April 30 1980 when she came to the throne, following the surprise abdication of her long-serving mother, Queen Juliana. Her coronation took place amid riots that pitted security forces against squatters.
But, in the 25 years that have followed, Beatrix has endeared herself to the nation and a recent opinion poll indicated some 92 percent of the Dutch people are happy with her reign. Organisers hope the festivities will reinforce the Queen’s role as a symbol of national unity, especially in the wake of ethnic tensions that followed the murder of Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh.
