The Iraqi president says his forces have made a grisly find in the River Tigris, south of Baghdad. Jalal Talabani announced the bodies of 50 people had been recovered from the water near Soueira. They are believed to be those of hostages who were reported to have been detained in Madaen earlier in the week.

“We have the full names of those who were killed and those criminals who carried out these crimes and the Prime Minister, Dr Allawi, is going to deal with it,” he said. Last Saturday, Shi’ite officials said Sunni militants had taken 50 people hostage. Iraqi forces, backed up by US troops, launched a raid to rescue them on Monday, but found no-one.
