Led by Germany’s Joseph Ratzinger, dozens of Roman Catholic cardinals have decided that Pope John Paul II will be buried on Friday. They held their first meeting today since the Pope’s death, beginning the arcane and secretive process of choosing a successor.
65 of the 117 cardinals eligible to elect the next pontiff attended today’s meeting.
The next so-called congregation of the red-hatted cardinals takes place tomorrow at 10am.
An open-air mass will be held at 10 o’clock on April 8, after which John Paul’s body will be buried under St Peter’s Basilica, as is customary for deceased pontiffs.
