Several thousand protestors have gathered outside the venue in Ramallah where Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has been meeting UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. They’re demanding that Annan meet them instead of the politicians. The protestors want Annan to address the issue of the wall that Israel is building to separate it from the Palestinian territories.
Inside Annan and Abbas shook hands for the cameras. This is the UN leaders first visit to the region in four years. He’s expected to discuss the roadmap peace plan that has been revived since Mr Abbas became president.
Annan arrived yesterday and has already met Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Israel has said it will uproot 24 illegal settler outposts in the West Bank. The pullout is due to start in July.
The US brokered roadmap for peace demands Israel destroy all West Bank settler outposts erected after March 2001.
