In the US, the number of people without work applying for assistance for the first time fell unexpectedly by 5,000 last week. Labour department figures show that 326,000 people without work filed for unemployment insurance in the week before Christmas, down from a revised 331,000 a week earlier.

Analysts say there does not appear to be any special factors coming into play in the drop. They say seasonal adjustments had already taken into account the effects of a week made shorter because of the holidays.
