Text size Aa Aa

Security is being stepped up across Spain over the Christmas period. For the first time emergency measures are being taken across the country to counter the threat of a terrorist attack. More than 65,000 members of the security forces will be involved in the operation drawing personnel from the army, airforce and the police. The measures are expected to be in force until January 8.

Special patrols have been set up. Check points have been put in place around the capital and other cities. The country remains highly sensitive to the threat of the terrorist attack since March 11 train bombings, which killed 191 people, one of whom was a pregnant woman.
