A Jewish settler leader has called for a campaign of “civil disobedience” in response to Ariel Sharon’s controversial plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip. Pinchas Wallerstein insisted he was not inciting rebellion, but was asking Israelis in the Gaza Strip and the few West Bank settlements under threat to show their anger in public. He says he is ready to go to prison to fight the withdrawal. Sharon insists the unilateral pullout programme will go ahead next year, and has criticised the call for civil disobedience as “harsh”. Wallerstein has warned some radical settlers could resort to violence.
