Pledging to support Iraq’s transition to democracy, foreign ministers from 20 countries have wrapped up two days of talks in Egypt. The final communique gives full backing to Baghdad’s efforts to hold landmark elections in January. Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, called for reconciliation between Iraq’s religious and ethnic groups. Iraqi foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari praised the EU and international creditors for helping the reconstruction process. The conference in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh brought together Iraq’s six neighbours, Arab and other countries as well as regional organisations.
