From next summer, the Spanish will start operating a points system for drivers’ licences, as in Britain, France, Germany and several other EU states.

The Spanish permit will have 12 points on it, or eight for new drivers. Points will be deducted for offences, and the licence can be suspended for up to a year or taken away for good. A lost licence or points can be retrieved by taking compulsory re-education classes. In today’s Europe, some 52,000 people are killed on the roads each year; Traffic injuries number in the millions.
