EU tells Britain to be clearer on its financial obligations as latest round of talks finishes in Brussels

You’ve got weeks to tell us what you’ll pay, or risk delaying talks on future relations. That’s the message from the EU, as it piles more pressure on Britain to be clearer about its financial obligations when Brexiting in 2019, after the latest talks in Brussels.

Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, said that the bloc needs to secure stability post-divorce.

“We must, we want to restore security, including legal certainty where Brexit creates uncertainty and much concern,” he told reporters.

Barnier says more progress has to be made on the current issues, including how to avoid putting up a physical border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

“We recognise the need for specific solutions for the unique circumstances of Northern Ireland. But let me be clear, this cannot amount creating a new border inside the UK,” said David Davis, UK Brexit Secretary.

Reporting from Brussels, euronews’ Damon Embling said: “Another round of tough negotiations comes to a close here in Brussels. And while some progress has been made, it’s clear both sides have still work to do on the main sticking points: the Irish border, citizens rights and the big Brexit bill. The heat is now on with the EU leaders’ summit looming in just a month time when Britain is so desperate for that next stage of talks to be launched on trade and the future relationship.”
