The European Commission has urged the Spanish and Catalan governments to move from “confrontation to dialogue”.

At a briefing with journalists, Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas described yesterday’s independence referendum as “illegal” and an “internal matter for Spain”.

While ignoring calls to specifically condemn the actions of riot police which left more than 700 people injured, she noted that violence “can never be an instrument in politics”.
