Russians reinvent curling by using cars as equipment

Participants in this Russian curling tournament are sliding compact cars down the ice instead of stones

In the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, car insurers invented a new sport to bring awareness to the dangers of black ice accidents on the roadways. Tournament participants pushed Russian-made Oka cars free of glass or heavy parts like the engine block down an ice rink. Like the traditional rules of curling, teams had nine attempts to get their three cars closest to the centre as they could, with additional points awarded for each car of their own colour closest to that of their opponent. The winning team took home 100,000 rubles or about €1600.
