North Korean schools hold ceremonies to welcome new students at the start of the school year.

North Korea’s official news agency KCNA said that North Korea started its 12-year compulsory schooling programme in 2014.

The new programme consists of one year of kindergarten, five years of primary school, three years of junior secondary school and three years of senior secondary school.
