A series of tornadoes and storms swept through the southern state of Alabama in the US. Alabama was the worst hit, but deaths were also reported in Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, Virginia and Louisiana. In total over 300 lives were lost and hundreds of homes and businesses have been destroyed, though the full scale of the destruction has yet to be assessed. It was the worst US natural catastrophe since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
