Syrian refugees fleeing the war are paying traffickers to smuggle into Europe. The route for some is via Bulgaria, crossing through a vast forest between it and Turkey.

But the EU’s poorest member country is ill-equipped to deal with the deluge of displaced people. Conditions are tough and the refugees don’t want to stay in Bulgaria.
