<p>2017 is set to be confirmed as the <a href="http://www.euronews.com/2017/11/15/october-confirms-2017-as-one-of-hottest-years-on-record">warmest year on record</a> not influenced by warming El Niño conditions. More than 1,200 people have died in flooding <a href="http://www.euronews.com/2017/09/03/south-asia-hit-by-deadly-monsoon-flooding">across India, Bangladesh</a> and Nepal. Drought affected East Africa and the western United States. Prolonged dry conditions in southern Europe led to water shortages and wildfires. </p> <p>Europe in 2017 was generally warmer than the long-term average, particularly in the far north. Sea-ice cover was notably below average. December was particularly warm in eastern Europe, with lower than average temperatures in the southwest.</p>
