The action takes place on the Inguri River, on the border between Georgia and the breakaway region of Abkhazia.
The quiet life of an old peasant and his granddaughter, who settle on one of the river’s islands to grow corn, is disturbed by the comings and goings of border guards.
The movie features very little dialogue. The action focusses on the island itself. But the Georgian director successfully sustains the audience’s interest in this meticulously orchestrated production.
A contemplative atmosphere prevails, but tension and suspense are never far off.
The granddaughter’s character is especially intriguing in this movie which offers a delicate portrayal of the passage from childhood to adolescence.
