Trump dedicates a golf trophy to hurricane victims

US president Donald Trump has dedicated a golf trophy to the hurricane victims of Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida.

“On behalf of all of the people of Texas, and all of the people – if you look today and see what is happening, how horrible it is, but we have it under really great control – Puerto Rico and the people of Florida who have really suffered over this last short period of time with the hurricanes. I want to just remember them and we’re going to dedicate this trophy to all of those people that went through so much that we love, a part of our great state, really a part of our great nation”, Trump said as he presented the award Presidents Cup golf tournament in New Jersey.

The homage comes days after San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz criticized the Trump administration over its hurricane recovery efforts.

“We are dying here and I cannot fathom the thought that the greatest nation in the world cannot figure out logistics for a small island. […] I We have no time for patience anymore. So I’m asking the President of the United States to make sure somebody is in charge, that is up to the task of saving lives. […] If anybody out there is listening to us, we are dying and you are killing us with the inefficiency and the bureaucracy,” she said during a press conference on Friday (September 29).

Yulín Cruz also criticized Trump’s Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke for saying that the response to the hurricane has been “a good news story”.

The mayor’s appeal sparked an intense pouring of angry tweets from the US President on Saturday (September 30).

Congressmen from the Democratic Party have recently criticized Trump’s tribute to the victims, alleging that receiving basic needs would be more appreciated.

I’m sure hurricane victims would rather have electricity, food, and water. https://t.co/ED9FibmcsN— Gregory Meeks (@GregoryMeeks) October 2, 2017

Dear realDonaldTrump: US citizens in Puerto Rico need water, food, oxygen tanks, medicine BUT NOT A GOLF TROPHY. You still don’t get it. https://t.co/FHrrJLHtT0— Ted Lieu (tedlieu) October 2, 2017

Hey Puerto Rico – you still don’t have electricity or drinkable water. But good news: Trump dedicated a golf trophy to you. Feel better now? https://t.co/8ddoJLMGI2— US Rep Brendan Boyle (@RepBrendanBoyle) October 2, 2017
