Russian jets 'destroy ISIL column' in Syria

Russia’s defence ministry claims its air force has destroyed a large column of fighters from the self-proclaimed Islamic State in Syria, killing over 200 militants.

The reported air strike took place near the eastern city of Deir al-Zor.

According to the news agency TASS, Russian planes in Syria have flown more than 300 sorties over the past five days, launching more than 800 strikes on the extremist group.

The jihadists still control most of the province but have been losing ground elsewhere.

Moscow, which backs President Assad’s forces in the war, has been bombing ISIL positions along the frontline in Deir al-Zour to try to stop the government enclave from falling.
