Japan braces for more rain, counts cost of landslides

More rains are expected today in Japan, where rescue workers have spent another night near Hiroshima looking for survivors of a Wednesday deluge that triggered landslides.

At least 39 people are confirmed dead and hope has all but run out for the 43 still unaccounted for. A month’s rain fell in one night, and fears of a new landslide means that 4,400 people have been evacuated, and another 164,000 were advised to leave their homes.

Some 200 homes have been buried under a thick layer of mud or have suffered damage. The terrain has already been saturated after weeks of steady rain, and any more downpours could be deadly.
