Mandela sign interpreter had ‘schizophrenic episode’

The ‘fake’ interpreter, whose nonsensical translation during Nelson Mandela memorial was reportered all over the world, says he suffered a schizophrenic episode.

A South-African newspaper, The Star, found Thamsanqa Jantjie. He explained to the journalist that he suddenly lost all concentration and started hearing voices and hallucinating : “There was nothing I could do. I was alone in a very dangerous situation. I tried to control myself and not show the world what was going on.” He apologized for what happened.

The 34-year old man said that because of his illness he was medically boarded a few years ago. He now relies on social grant and his wages as a sign language interpreter for SA Interpreters.

AP press agency also indicates that the man was known for having been violence in the past and having seen “angels”.
