(Reuters) - Wasps hooker Ashley Johnson will be available for the club's opening Premiership matches after being handed a backdated six-month ban for a failed drugs test in February.

The 32-year-old South African, who last played for Wasps in the Premiership on March 4, said he tested positive for the banned substance hydrochlorothiazide after mistakenly taking his wife's dietary supplement.

"I was horrified when I got the test results and once we tracked back and worked out I had inadvertently taken the wrong tablet... ," Johnson said in a statement on Wasps' website.

"I am now working hard in pre-season and am looking forward to putting this behind me and getting back to being part of the Wasps squad."

Wasps begin their Premiership campaign at Worcester on Sept. 1.
