Thousands of Brazilians took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday to protest the execution-style murder of a popular city councillor.

As a human rights acivist, Marielle Franco was an outspoken critic of police killings of poor residents.

She was killed along with her driver on Rio's dangerous north side last week.

Her press secretary, who was travelling in the same vehicle, suffered minor injuries but was not shot.

Gathered for a concert in Franco's honour outside Rio's town hall, citizens demanded justice as well as answers about her killing.
