A Russian hypersonic missile has been successfully test-launched from a MiG-31 jet.

It took off from an airfield in south-west Russia.

The Kinzhal missile is said to travel at ten times the speed of sound and has a range of 2,000 kms.

President Vladimir Putin, in his State of the Nation speech earlier this month, described the Kinzhal missile, as "an ideal weapon".

Mr Putin says it's part of a new stockpile of invincible weapons.

He says the missile was developed as a response to the US withdrawal from the Anti Ballistic Missile treaty in 2002.

The missile launch comes as Russia's presidential elections next weekend, are set to return Putin for a fourth term.

Experts say he wants to prove to the Russian people that he remains fit to lead, after nearly twenty years in power.
