Looking forlorn but hopeful, this dog sat guard for months outside a Sao Paulo hospital wondering if his owner might return.

A dog's loyalty can be heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once. This mutt in Sao Paulo has been refusing to leave the doorway of the hospital his owner died in for four months, still hoping he might return.

His human companion, a homeless man, had been stabbed on the street, according to a Brazilian news bulletin. When medics took him away the dog chased after the ambulance. Tragically, the man did not survive and died in hospital.

Cristine Sardella lives locally and snapped the forlorn-looking dog as it stood guard at the entrance to Santa Casa de Novo Horizonte medical centre late last month. Speaking to The Dodo she said the animal had been there for four months at this point. Although the creature had been picked up by a dog rescuer, he escaped and was soon back in his spot.

One of the hospital staff has now stepped up and will adopt the animal. But only once it's good and ready to leave its post.
