People in the northern Kosovan town of Mitrovica have paid their respects to the Kosovo Serb politician gunned down on Tuesday..

Oliver Ivanovic was shot dead in Mitrovica by unknown attackers. He was standing trial over the killings of ethnic Albanians during the 1998-99 war.

Ivanovic's lawyer said it was time for the violence in Mitrovica to stop.

"This is one murder in a series of murders here. It's time that this is brought to an end. Simply, people who live in Northern Kosovo cannot live like this anymore," said Nebojsa Vlajic.

Newpaper headlines claiming the "Situation in the North Destabilized" emphasize the tense situation in Mitrovica which is bitterly divided between ethnic Serbs and Albanians. Ethnic Albanian-dominated Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but Belgrade does not recognize the split.
