African Swine Fever is becoming a cause for concern in Germany, as new cases break out in neighbouring Poland and the Czech Republic.

They are just two of six EU countries to be affected. Experts says the spread is being accelerated, among other things, by the collection of food scraps from motorway service stations.

Poland saw around 280 new cases of African Swine Fever in the two months between November and January.

Animal health research body the Friedrich Loeffler Institute has labelled the situation ‘alarming’.

While not harmful to humans, the disease is almost always fatal for pigs and wild boar and there is currently no vaccine against it.
