US President Donald Trump's latest travel ban targeting people from six mainly Muslim countries is to be allowed to go into full effect but legal challenges will continue.

The current ban is the third version of a contentious policy that Trump first sought to implement a week after taking office. The president says its needed to protect the US from terrorism by Islamic militants.

The Supreme Court's decision will effect people from Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen wishing to enter the United States.

Previously the scope of the ban had been limited to people without either family connections or study visas.

Trump's ban also covers people from North Korea and certain government officials from Venezuela, but lower courts had already allowed those provisions to go into full effect.

The ban has provoked many protests with critics saying it is discriminatory and violates the US constitution and is not permissible under immigration laws.
