Several people have died and dozens have been injured in an explosion in the Chinese city of Ningbo.

The blast damaged buildings in the Jiangbei District and premises up to a kilometre away were reported to have had their windows shattered.

Ningbo is a large shipping port and is also home to Geely, the Chinese owner of motor manufacturer, Volvo.

Emergency services carried people away from the scene and amateur footage shows debris scattered by the blast.

The explosion happened in an industrial area and it's thought that many of the damaged buildings were in an area scheduled for demolition.

It's reported that gas canisters may have been responsible for the blast but an investigation is now under way to determine the exact cause.

There have been almost 30,000 industrial fatalities in China this year alone.

In Ningbo, at least thirty people have been taken to local hospitals as part of the rescue operations in Ningbo, two of them are in a serious condition.
