It’s taken 7 days, 22 hours, 7 minutes and 27 seconds, but Thomas Colville and Jean-Luc Nélias have won the Ultime class of the Transat Jacques Vabre.

For Thomas Coville, the skipper of Sodebo Ultim’ it is a second Transat Jacques Vabre victory to add to his 1999 win.

The French duo smashed the previous record for completing the run from the French port of Le Havre to Salvador de Bahia in Brazil by 2 days, 2 hours and 31 minutes.

For most of the race, Colville and Nelias battled it out with Sebastien Josse and Thomas Rouxel who were eventually forced into second place nearly two hours behind the winners.

The 37 yachts in the race, which traces the route of coffee cargo boats in years gone by, is for boats crewed by two sailors.
