The party of ousted Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, the Catalan European Democratic party, has reselected him to lead it into the December 21st election called in Catalonia by Madrid.

To chants of ‘Freedom, Freedom’ the meeting heard defiant words from its spokeswoman.

“Ours is a bid for those who are deprived of freedom, therefore the ministers ousted by Article 155, are to be included in our elections list. We want President Puigdemont to lead this landslide that we will have on the 21st December in the ballots. May he be, may he be,” said spokeperson Marta Pascal.

While opinon polls all seemed to agree that even united Catalonia’s nationalists of different stripes would still fall short of a majority, and on a record turnout, independence supporters only mustered a few hundred on Barcelona’s streets on Sunday.

A general strike has been called for Wednesday, with mass demonstrations planned for next weekend.
