Wimbledon champion Roger Federer has beaten Rafael Nadal in the final of the Shanghai Masters.

The Swiss delivered a masterclass in 72 minutes to beat the world number one in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

It is the 36-year-old’s sixth title this year and his fifth victory in succession over the Spaniard.

The win also gave Federer his 94th career title, moving him level with Ivan Lendl in terms of Open era titles. Only American Jimmy Connors (109) has more.

In the Tianjin Open, Russia’s Maria Sharapova clinched her first WTA title since returning from a drug ban.

The former world number one, who entered the tournament on a wildcard, beat Belarusian teenager Aryna Sabalenka 7-5, 7-6.
