Exhibition shines light on raw memories of war

Memories of war are being brought to life at Britain’s Blenheim Palace in a new solo exhibition by American artist Jenny Holzer.

More than 50 artworks – including paintings, LED signs and carved stone benches – recounting raw experiences of war are on display at the SOFTER exhibition, which opened on September 28.

The installations use testimonies collected through British charity The Not Forgotten Association, the writing of Polish artist Anna Świrszczyńska, and information from NGOs and US government documents to present themes of conflict and memory.

The exhibition was inspired by the military history of Oxfordshire landmark Blenheim and by recent global conflicts.

“My first visit to Blenheim Palace left me with too many ideas, on the complex past and its relevance to this knife-edge present,” Holzer said.
