A French girl has been seriously injured after a pack of rats attacked her while she was asleep.

The 14-year-old, who is paraplegic, was found in her bed covered in rat bites and blood.

It is thought the rats swarmed into the girl’s room in Roubaix, in the north of France near Lille.

A medic expert quoted by television channel France Info said the girl had 45 facial lesions, 150 on her hands and 30 on her feet.

The teenager’s father told local newspaper Courrier Picard: “There was blood everywhere…She was bleeding from her ears, I was terrified she’d had a brain haemorrhage.”

He added that some of the girl’s fingertips were bitten off and surgeons are unable to repair them.

The incident, which took place last Saturday, was described by a policeman as “very violent”.

The girl’s father explained that her daughter’s illness means she has a higher pain threshold and was unable to alert her parents.

Tests have shown the girl does not have rabies.

A medical expert said such an incident is extremely rare, as rats usually only feed on corpses.

Reports in local media said nearby bins were overflowing with rubbish.

The girl’s father is suing the landlord for alleged negligence.
