The French number one Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is out of the US Open after a straight sets defeat to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov.

The 18-year-old got off to a good start breaking the eighth seeded Tsonga to love in the opening game and the only sign of nerves came in the third set when he was broken while serving for the match before he rebounded in the tie-break.

In the next round he’ll face Britain’s Kyle Edmund, who beat American Steve Johnson.

In the women’s draw, Wimbledon champion and number three seed Garbine Muguruza made light work of China’s Duan Yingying winning 6-4, 6-love.

The Spaniard is now one of the seven women left in the draw who can finish the fortnight at Flushing Meadows as the WTA number one.
