Bonnie Tyler sees sales of her 1983 hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart" soar in the run up to Monday's total solar eclipse

She waited 34 years for her moment: Bonnie Tyler was on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship when she finally sung her 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” during an actual total eclipse.

In the week leading up to the event, downloads of the song were reportedly up by over 500%, despite the fact that its lyrics have nothing whatsoever to do with the solar phenomenon.

Sales of specialist eclipse glasses rocketed in the US amongst the 12 million people living beneath the path of the celestial lights-out.

The moment when the moon blocked out the light of the sun lasted about two and a half minutes in any one place, two minutes less than the total duration of Tyler’s song.

If the Welsh singer’s hoping for a repeat performance, she won’t have so long to wait next time: the next total solar eclipse will be in South America on 2 July, 2019.
