Sampha and Slaves at the Montreux Jazz Festival

They may be very different in style, but both Sampha and Slaves got the crowds going at Montreux

Sampha

At the Montreux Jazz festival, Sampha wooed crowds with a heartfelt rendition of “Blood on me”. Born in South London to Sierra Leonean parents, the self-effacing producer, composer and singer achieved fame through collaborations with big names such as Drake, Kanye West and Beyonce.

Sampha Sisal’s debut album, Process, may talk about illness, death and grief, but his haunting voice and searing melodies lift it out of pure melancholy and have attracted big audiences to hear him perform.

Slaves

The song might be called “Cheer up London”, but its message is more one of disappointment. British duo, Slaves, put in a hyperactive performance as part of their world tour. Their raw punk attitude won their first album Are you Satisfied overnight success in the UK, but they are still relatively unknown in Europe.
