The wonders of Pompeii are being slowly but surely uncovered, giving a clearer vision of a city that was wiped out nearly 2,000 years ago.

Jewellery, weapons, roads and more have been uncovered in recent excavations. A number of new sites shed light on the Italian city’s thriving past, digging deeper in time than ever before. The city’s origins in the 6th century BC have now been closely linked to the Etruscans, a cosmopolitan people from Tuscany who used to trade around the Mediterranean.

The ancient site was buried under metres of volcanic ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
