Thousands have attended the funeral of Otto Warmbier, the American student who died after slipping into a coma while in prison in North Korea.

More than 2,500 friends and family members came to the service at the 22-year-old’s former school in Ohio before his burial at a nearby cemetary.

His death after 17 months in custody in the secretive state has heightened tensions between the US and North Korea.

The student was arrested last year for stealing a piece of propaganda from his hotel on an organised tour of the country.

He broke down in tears during his sham trial and was forced to read a confession on state television.

The North Korean version of events was that he contracted botulism, a rare disease, and slipped into a coma after being given a sleeping pill.

Although some believe he died as a result of torture at the hands of his captors, we may never know what caused Otto Warmbier’s death.
