A painting by US artist Jean-Michel Basquiat has become the sixth most expensive canvas ever sold at auction.
Basquiat’s untitled 1982 depiction of a skull went for the equivalent of 84 million euros.
The same painting was sold for just 17,000 euros in 1984.
The auctioneer who dropped the hammer on the deal likened the “electrifying” auction to “pure drama.”
The winning bidder is 41-year-old online entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa, founder of Japan’s largest online fashion mall, Zozotown.
Maezawa intends to lend the painting to public art exhibits before retiring to his home in his native Japan.
Why Madonna broke up with Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat and Madonna dated in the springtime of their careers.
“He wouldn’t stop doing heroin. He was an amazing man and deeply talented, I loved him,” Madonna told the Howard Stern Show.
“When I broke up with him he made me give [the paintings he gave me] back to him. And then he painted over them black.” (via Art Market Monitor)
Basquiat, who struggled with addiction, died from a drugs overdose in 1988.
