Speaking in Paris in the wake of his convincing victory, French president-elect Emmanuel Macron vowed to protect the weak and bring France and the French together.

“Over the next five years, which are just getting underway, my responsibility will be to calm fears, to bring us renewal with optimism, to rediscover our capacity to overcome which captures the essence of France better than anything.”

“My responsibility will be to gather all men and women together to confront the enormous challenges awaiting us and to act.”

“I will fight with all my power against the divisions which undermine us and knock us back.”

What they are saying about the election result

“This is how we can give French people the chances they are owed, to each one of you in your professional, personal and family lives.”

“From tonight, and over the next five years, we are loving France.”

“In a spirit of humility, devotion, with determination to serve France in your name, long the Republic, long live France.”
