After accusing Brussels of interfering in the UK General Election, Theresa May has been cheered on and criticised by the UK press.

In a stinging attack, the UK Prime Minister accused European politicians of making “threats” against Britain to try to influence next month’s snap election result.

Her speech from the steps of Downing Street was interpreted as a declaration of war by much of the press.

“Hands off our election” read the front page of the Daily Mail which rallied around the Prime Minister and her “battle cry”. She has “rightly accused European politicians’ of trying to meddle in the election”, it said in its “leader column”: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-4471810/Battle-cry-want-free-Britain.html. Theresa May is on her way to victory and “you can almost smell the panic gripping European elites”.

Fellow Brexit-backing newspaper, “The Sun”: https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/3476769/the-sun-says-theresa-may-eu-infantiles-kicking/ “heartily applauds her for fighting our corner”. It insisted that “Brussels more than had it coming” after Jean-Claude Juncker reportedly belittled Mrs May during a private dinner at Downing Street, labeling the President of the European Commission ‘Nuclear Juncker’ in its headline. It claimed EU “bullies” have smacked members around for decades, but it’s “not going to happen with Britain”.

The Times declared “it’s war”. It argued that while the PM is right to acknowledge the EU’s hardening position against the UK, it warned that neither side will gain from “poisoning” the air ahead of EU talks. A similar headline was used by The Gurdian who claimed that if the PM is experiencing resistance in Europe over her “reckless plan for Brexit” the fault lies with her approach “not with those who question it”.

Meanwhile The Independent she may be following the “Donald Trump playbook”, in an opinion piece by its deputy managing director. “That dictates that, when in a tight corner, you calculatedly attack the media or make up some half-baked conspiracy theory to distract everyone from some gaffe policy flop of your own,” he said. It continued: “Either way, it does not look ‘strong and stable’ or the ‘constructive’ approach to Brexit talks she promised in her Article 50 letter.”
