British musician Elton John is resting at home after going down with a potentially deadly bacterial infection.

The 70-year-old became ill on a flight home from a recent South American tour. He spent two days in intensive care in hospital in the UK.

The infection has not been identified, but a statement said he contracted it during the tour, which ended in Chile on April 10.

Elton is expected to make a full recovery, but has cancelled all his concerts in Las Vegas for April and May, as well as a show in Bakersfield, California, on 6 May.

He has apologised to his fans for the cancellations, adding “I am extremely grateful to the medical team for their excellence in looking after me so well.”

Elton is due to return to the stage at a concert in England on 3 June.
