Roma and Napoli warmed up for their European action this week with a clash at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.
With Juventus eventually drawing one all at Udinese the following day it turned out to be the perfect opportunity for Napoli and Roma to keep alive their very slim title hopes whilst also boosting their automatic Champions League qualification aspirations.
Second-placed Roma headed into the tie five points clear of their league rivals, but after 50 minutes of play were 2-0 down courtesy of a double from Napoli’s Belgium international Dries Mertens.
Kevin Strootman scored late on for Roma to give the home side a glimmer of hope but when Diego Perotti’s last gasp injury time strike was superbly saved by Pepe Reina, Napoli were left celebrating a much needed victory.
They are now just two points behind Roma with Juventus eight points further out in front.

Elsewhere in the league
Torino’s Andrea Belotti scored the fastest Serie A hat trick in 17 years.
Belotti’s sensational eight-minute spell in his side’s 3-1 win over Palermo also lifted the player to the top of the Serie A scorers’ chart with 22 so far this term.
Inter continued their season revival with a 5-1 thumping of Cagliari.
The last time Inter scored three or more goals in the league was in February of last year against Verona.
After a sluggish start to the campaign they’re 6th in the topflight but only six points from the 3rd place.
League leaders Juventus missed the chance to go ten points clear at the top of the table following a one all draw with Udinese.
Juventus had not drawn a match in 38 consecutive Serie A outings.
