Fire engulfs wooden homes in favela on the outskirts of Brazil's most populous city . Hundreds of people are forced to flee

A raging fire which broke out in a Sao Paulo favela has destroyed at least 50 homes. Images of smoke billowing over the neighbourhood were broadcast live on Brazilian television.

According to the authorities, the fire began around 3 pm local time, its cause is unknown.
One image showed residents trying to battle the blaze with water from a small hose.

Dozens of firefighters arrived on the scene and eventually managed to bring the fire under control.
Only one person required medical attention due to smoke inhalation.
