Thousands of supporters have joined Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe to celebrate his 93rd birthday.

They gathered at a school in Matobo, just outside the country’s second biggest city Bulawayo.

Mugabe has maintained a tight grip on power since independence from Britain in 1980 and is due to stand for re-election next year.

Critics say his policies, like the seizure of white-owned farms for blacks and his black economic empowerment drive, have ruined the once-promising country.
